About Hulihua
Hulihua is a Hawaiian word puzzle that challenges you to find five-letter words while exploring the language through simple, fun and thoughtful gameplay.
Hulihua is a browser-based Hawaiian word game inspired by the popular five-letter guessing format. Instead of using English, the game gives players a chance to work with Hawaiian vocabulary, making each puzzle both a brain teaser and a small introduction to the language.
The project is based on code created by Aidan Pine of The Mother Tongues Blog. His work was designed to help advocates of Indigenous languages create their own versions of this type of word game. Hulihua puts that idea into practice by adapting the familiar puzzle format for Hawaiian.
The current game includes roughly 400 five-letter words collected from older Hawaiian texts. Its word list is still developing, so some words found in other Hawaiian resources may not appear in the game yet. The project is intended to become more complete over time, with the possibility of expanding the vocabulary and translating more of the game into Hawaiian.
GAMEPLAY AT A GLANCE
Hulihua keeps the controls simple, so most of the challenge comes from choosing smart guesses. Start by entering a five-letter Hawaiian word that you think could fit the puzzle. After submitting it, check the feedback provided by the game to see which letters are useful and which ones can be ruled out.
Continue adjusting your guesses until the hidden word becomes clear. Because the game focuses on Hawaiian vocabulary, a dictionary or Hawaiian language resource can also be helpful for players who are still learning.
The Growing Hawaiian Word List
One of the most interesting parts of Hulihua is that its vocabulary is still a work in progress. The current collection contains around 400 five-letter words gathered from older texts, but it is not intended to represent every Hawaiian word.
Some words found in resources such as Māmaka Kaiao or the Pukui/Elbert dictionary may not be included yet. This means encountering an unfamiliar or unrecognized word does not necessarily mean that the word does not exist in Hawaiian. The developer hopes to make the list more robust in the future and potentially translate the entire game into Hawaiian. That ongoing development gives Hulihua a purpose beyond simple entertainment.
More Than Just a Daily Puzzle
For casual players, Hulihua offers a quick word challenge that can fit easily into a short break. For language enthusiasts, it provides another way to encounter Hawaiian vocabulary and notice how different words are structured.
The game can also appeal to players who enjoy discovering languages through interactive experiences. Instead of memorizing long vocabulary lists, you learn by experimenting, recognizing patterns, and thinking carefully about each guess. Teachers, students, and language advocates may also find the concept useful because it demonstrates how familiar game formats can be adapted to support Indigenous languages.
