Chessguessr is less about finding the move you would play and more about figuring out what the original player actually played. Each daily puzzle drops you into the middle of a real chess game, with five moves hidden just beyond the current position.
THE BOARD GIVES AWAY MORE THAN IT SEEMS
Chessguessr begins with one real-game position and five empty moves to predict. Your first sequence can come from anything you notice on the board, but forcing options such as checks, captures, and serious threats are often worth considering.
Feedback after the attempt becomes the main source of information. Correctly placed moves can stay locked in your thinking, while misplaced or partially matching moves can help shape the next sequence. Each guess becomes less about random prediction and more about eliminating possibilities.
Each guess produces colored feedback that gradually reveals the hidden continuation.
- Green: Move and position are both correct.
- Yellow: Move belongs to the sequence but sits elsewhere.
- Blue: Same piece type moved, but the move is different.
- Gray: Move does not appear in the answer.
The clues work together rather than separately. One green tile can establish part of the sequence, while yellow or blue feedback can suggest where your thinking needs to change. Exact notation also matters, so checks and captures cannot be treated as minor details.
